Previous studies dealt with sacrificial layers made of aluminum foams as protective layers, in order to absorb energy and mitigate structural damage. The coupled dynamic response of the sacrificial layers and the structure that needs to be protected is complicated.

While previous studies focused on aluminum foams with uniform density, here we investigate the application of gradient-based density (or nonuniform density foams). We estimate their efficiency in mitigating damage using the Shock Front Theory and compare their performance with uniform-density foams having the same total mass and thickness.

The paper presents nontrivial findings, which lead to the understanding that adequate design must be considered when nonuniform foams are used to achieve optimal damage mitigation.
